Named after Lord Shiva (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 km from Srinagar (Garhwal). The presence of two separate routes for Badrinath and Kedarnath Dham from Rudraprayag render great importance to the place. The entire region is blessed with immense natural beauty, places of religious importance, lakes and glaciers.

Rudra Prayag is a small town that is located in the state of Uttarakhand and in the district of Rudraprayag. The town is situated at the confluence of the River Alaknanda and River Mandakini. It has a special religious significance for many people as well. It is said that the place where the two rivers meet resembles two sisters embracing each other and there is a unique beauty about the place. Many visitors travel to the place to witness this phenomenon every year. The entire area is surrounded by immense beauty and one can see many lakes, glaciers, rivers and streams here. There are a few temples that are located in the town as well and these are a must visit while travelling to Rudra Prayag.

The main temples are the Jagdamaba Temple and the Shiva Temple. The town of Kedarnath which is an important pilgrimage center for many Hindus is located around 86 km from the town of Rudra Prayag and this can be visited as well. The Koteshwar Temple can be seen on the banks of the Alaknanda River and this is also a popular site in the town. Son Prayag and Okhimath are present outside the town and are important religious sites as well.

Dhari Devi Temple

Dhari Devi a temple located on the banks of the Alaknanda River between Srinagar and Rudraprayag in the Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand, India. The temple is home to the upper half of the idol of the goddess Dhari, while the lower half of the idol is located in Kalimath, where she is worshipped as a manifestation of the Goddess Kali.

She is considered to be the guardian deity of Uttarakhand and is revered as the protector of the Char Dhams. Her shrine is one of 108 Shakti Sthals in India, as numbered by Srimad Devi Bhagwat.


Augustmuni is a small town situated on the banks of Mandakini river and takes its name from Rishi Augustya – one of the most respected ancient gurus in Hindu mythology. The place is important for Chardham yatris because of the presence of a helipad from where helicopter tours of the Char Dham are undertaken.

The beautiful surroundings of Himalayas and River Mandakini gives Augustyamuni a feel of peace and tranquility. The small village town which was built in the ancient times in the name of the famous Rishi Augustya, who use to have his own gurukul here, is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. The majestic mountains, the rapidly flowing Mandakini River and the coolness in the air makes this place an ideal spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. The town is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of other hill stations and make yourself one with nature.The temple of sage Agastya is the main attraction here.

Koteshware Mahadev Temple

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located approximately 3 kilometres from Rudraprayag city centre, situated a little above the Alaknanda River.

According to the legends, this place is considered to be the spot where Lord Shiva stopped for meditation on his way to Kedarnath. According to local mythology the temple has existed since the time of Bhasmasura – a demon who turned to ashes anyone whose head he touched. Lord Shiva went into hiding to escape him, resting in various places before coming to the cave at Koteshwar Mahadev. Shiva rested here for some time, meditating, before confronting and defeating the demon.
